The Launch of the "Computational Thinking Education Program" in Target Primary Schools across Cambodia

by Pichreangsey Leath | 8th Jun, 2026

The core objective of this initiative is to shift the mindset of young Cambodian learners from passive "technology consumers" into creative "technology creators" equipped with logical problem-solving skills from an early age

In the era of digital transformation, strengthening the quality of technology education is a critical priority to ensure sustainable national development. In response to this vision, on June 6, 2026, the Ministry of Education, Youth and Sport hosted the official launch ceremony of the "CoolThink@JC Computational Thinking Education Program" and the opening of the Training of Trainers (ToT) course for master teachers at target schools. This highly significant event was presided over by H.E. Dr. Hang Chuon Naron, Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Education, Youth and Sport, with the distinguished presence of Mr. Jackson Woo, Hong Kong Jockey Club Charity Chairman Trust, along with school management and teachers from 8 target provinces and the capital.

This national project is the result of a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) signed in June 2025 between the Ministry of Education, Youth and Sport and The Hong Kong Jockey Club Charities Trust. Driven by the vision of bridging the digital divide, the world-class CoolThink@JC curriculum will be deployed across 100 target public schools, supporting the learning of approximately 30,000 students and upskilling 500 teachers between 2025 and 2028. The core objective of this initiative is to shift the mindset of young Cambodian learners from passive "technology consumers" into creative "technology creators" equipped with logical problem-solving skills from an early age.

To ensure the effective and sustainable implementation of this program at the school level, the Deputy Prime Minister provided four key recommendations. First, school management must lead with dedication in maintaining digital infrastructure, computer labs, and equipment, while coordinating clear learning timetables both during school hours and through after-school study clubs. Second, focal teachers must serve as mentors who actively share knowledge with colleagues (Peer-to-Peer Learning). Third, schools must transform into inclusive spaces that actively bridge the digital divide, ensuring every student—especially female students and those in rural areas—has equal access. Fourth, strengthening partnerships with parents and communities by showcasing students' creative works and digital projects to secure broader support and a deeper understanding of the value of digital education from an early age.

Driven by the commitment to support this national educational mission, Tech for Kids Academy is deeply honored to collaborate as the technical and quality assurance partner for the localization and review of the CoolThink@JC textbooks for both students and teachers across all three levels (Grades 4, 5, and 6). Additionally, Tech for Kids Academy contributed to facilitating and conducting the first Computational Thinking Training of Trainers (ToT) workshop on February 23-24, 2026. This training empowered 40 teachers from 40 target primary schools across 8 provinces and the capital—including Phnom Penh, Kampong Cham, Kampong Speu, Battambang, Siem Reap, Preah Sihanouk, Pursat, and Preah Vihear—ensuring that educators possess the full confidence and capability to teach the Scratch programming curriculum aligned with the CoolThink pedagogical framework.

Through this collaboration, we are pleased to contribute to building a strong foundation in digital literacy and fostering early interest in technology for children, working together to establish a sustainable digital education ecosystem.

We express our warmest congratulations and high appreciation for this strategic collaboration among all key stakeholders, which stands as a powerful testament to the strong partnership driving the development of Cambodia's education sector. Through laying this foundation of computational thinking, the Ministry of Education, Youth and Sport, The Hong Kong Jockey Club Charities Trust, and supporting partners are together building a quality national network of digital educators, paving a sustainable path toward a bright digital future for Cambodia's youth.
