Kid-KATHON 2025 Successfully Concludes: Empowering Youth to Become Problem-Solvers Through Technology
The program began with a careful and selective recruitment process. After receiving many applications, 60 candidates were shortlisted for interviews. From there, 30 outstanding students were selected to join the program—many of whom were coding for the first time.
Once selected, the 30 students were immediately grouped into six teams, each assigned with a dedicated mentor to guide them in learning and developing group projects. Participants took part in an intensive 1.5-day training focused on the basics of coding using Micro:bit and project development methods. With active collaboration and valuable mentorship, the six teams successfully created innovative prototype projects, including:
• The Brave: A device to collect trash from water sources.
• AI Driven: A flood level measurement tool that provides alerts and helps manage traffic.
• Micro:Earth: An automatic gas shut-off device in case the user forgets to turn it off.
• Baby Shark: A device that reminds users to take their medicine.
• Golden Nuggets: A “Tell-Tale-Tweet” device that auto-waters plants when soil is dry.
• El Clásico: A system that turns off lights automatically when no one is home.
The final competition day, held on June 1, 2025, from 1:00 PM to 5:00 PM at the Manulife Cambodia Head Office (3A Floor, TK Central Building), saw the six teams courageously present their impressive prototypes to an audience of over 100 attendees, including parents, guardians, teachers, and tech enthusiasts. Their projects clearly demonstrated their grasp of technical knowledge, teamwork, and the ability to turn creative ideas into tangible solutions using Micro:bit to address community challenges and the SDGs.
After the presentations from all six teams and careful deliberation by the judges, team AI Driven was announced as the Kid-KATHON 2025 Champion for their project, "An Urban Flood Level Measurement Device for Warning and Traffic Management." Their project, which addresses Sustainable Development Goal 11, demonstrated innovative thinking and practical potential for implementation.
“I’m really happy—and surprised! I think what makes Kid-KATHON unique is that we got to learn about SDGs while coding,” shared a member of the winning team.
“We believe that in the future, society will need people who can use technology to solve real problems,” said judge Ms. Sophiman, Kid-KATHON 2025 Judge .
“Parents should encourage their kids to join programs like Kid-KATHON if they’re interested in tech. I truly admire this initiative—it’s amazing what such young students were able to build,” noted one parent.
The success of Kid-KATHON 2025 would not have been possible without the invaluable support from our partners.
